INTRODUCTION TO THE IAIJUTSU SYLLABUS
Every Muso Jikiden Eishen Ryu student starts training as an implied 8th Kyu. Subject to making satisfactory progress and attendance, students will be invited by Sensei to undertake their first formal Kyu rank test after about 6 months of regular training.
Charlottesville Budokan LLC is aligned with the KNBK/JKI (Kokusai Nippon Budo Kai and the Jikishin Kai International) We are subject to the KNBK/JKI test requiements as a registered Kenkyukai (study group) and will abide by these standards. The syllabus encompasses Batto ho (standing techniques), Tachiuchi no Kurai (two man drills), Suemono giri (cutting). As per the assent of Carl Long, Kyoshi, Director of the East Coast Hombu Dojo, I, Sensei Gage, have added the seiza waza (kneeling techniques) along side each kyu rank requirement.
Iaijutsu members are encouraged to think of the grading process as a lifelong journey, in which the individual seeks to excel as best he or she can. That journey is not competitive, nor should a student feel that he or she is being compared to peers. Charlottesville Budokan LLC values each student as an individual and for his/her own unique abilities and talents.
Hachi-Kyu (8th Kyu) through Roku-Kyu (6th Kyu):
Students will learn basic history of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu Hei Ho, you will learn the basic parts of the bokken (katana) as well as Reishiki (etiquette). The five techniques which are the lifeblood of Iaijutsu will be introduced ( Nukitsuke, Furikaburi, Kirioroshi, Chiburi and Noto). This introduction is the first step of many years of working towards the perfection of these techniques.
